AFTERNOON: Cloud Boat + patten + Rauelsson + Inwolves
Possibly one of the best hidden musical gems of 2013 was UK duo’s Cloud Boat’s debut Book of Hours: intimate, melancholic electronica for late-night dreams. Looking for points of reference, James Blake is often mentioned – a long-time friend of the two band members Tom Clarke (touching falsetto voice) and Sam Ricketts (delicate beats and filmic guitars).
Another Londoner is patten, and just like several other prolific electronic producers from the English capital, little is known of the man behind the decks. A recent Warp signing, patten creates eclectic electronica that flirts, plays and fiddles with the influences of illustrious labelmates like Boards of Canada, Plaid and Autechre. His newer sound focuses slightly more on beats, like recent EP EOLIAN INSTATE or his upcoming second album ESTOILE NAIANT, which will be released one day after Artefact.
Raúl Pastor Medall aka Rauelsson doesn’t limit himself to one genre either. The Spanish multi-instrumentalist debuted with intimate folk songs, whereas the classical-meets-electronica approach on his recent album Vora (2013) hints at the sound of Hauschka and Peter Broderick – whom Rauelsson collaborated with.
The opening act of the day are Belgian Inwolves, a new project of Karen Willems (Zita Swoon Group), Warp Dupan (Low Vertical) and Jürgen de Blonde (de portables). Sounds of the Meetjesland inspired them to create an equally surreal and filmic sound trip.
EVENING : Fennesz with Lillevan visuals + Yves De Mey
‘Imagine the electric guitar severed from cliché and all of its physical limitations, shaping a bold new musical language.’
For over 15 years, Austrian Christian Fennesz has used his computer and guitar to create equally intriguing and intimate electronica. Don't expect sterile computer experiments, because Fennesz' compositions are warm, lively and intricate, something like listening to the recordings of insects in a rainforest. Next to several studio albums, collaborations with Sparklehorse and Ryuichi Sakamoto, remixes and soundtracks, Fennesz even had tributes released, by other impressive names like Tim Hecker.
On this tour, Fennesz again collaborates with Berlin-based video and media artist Lillevan, also known as co-founder of Rechenzentrum, who played at Artecact 2005. Lillevan has collaborated with artists from all possible disciplines, from opera to experimental electronica, from dance to classical music, including concerts with Morton Subotnick and at major festivals like Transmediale and Mutek.
The support comes form one of Belgian electronica's finest: Yves De Mey, known as one part of Sendai (with Peter Van hoesen) and under his previous alias Eavesdropper. Think analogue production and vintage synths, and imagine the grey are between ambient, electronica and noise. But most of all: let yourself drift away in a wonderful ocean of sound.
