RAINFOREST workshop

The RAINFOREST workshop, launched by Derek Holzer and Mads Bech Paluszewski-Hau, is a contemporary reinterpretation of David Tudor’s eponymous series of compositions during the 70ies. It uses special sorts of transformers to transfer live sounds through several metal objects, whereby the entire room becomes an orchestra of resonating voices.

During the Artefact festival 2017 STUK hosts the RAINFOREST workshop starting from February 25th to March 1st, with the support of the Danish Arts Foundation. Together with Holzer and Paluszewski-Hau 8 participants will build installations and rehearse for an evening that proves that there is a world of sound in everyday objects.

On Tuesday 28 February, Jelle Van Zweden, researcher Biology faculty KU Leuven, will give lecture on The Magic of animal signals, as part of RAINFOREST. 

PARTICIPANTS 

Zoë Mc Pherson (Belgium)
Zoë Mc Pherson is a French Northern-Irish producer & vocalist based in Brussels. Her project Empty Taxi is the result of her anthropological take on current day electronica. She researches tribes and rituals around the world. During her field trips she makes recordings which afterwards she translates into an atmospheric and hypnotic beat driven music.

Joseph Sallis (United Kingdom)
Works at Newcastle University as Fine Art Technician. He graduated in Visual Performance from Dartington School of Arts in 2001. His work pursues an interest in frequency. For example, an elastic tonality, a tolerance of rhythmic dissonance, or the interaction between an electronic vibration and a resonant, acoustic space.

 
Ben Tanghe (Belgium)
Tanghe is a student in sound engineering in Antwerpen. He moved to Antwerp where he studied kleinkunst (dutch-spoken "chanson") at the royal conservatory.  Because of a growing need to step outside of the constricting nature of pop music, he started following evening classes in sound design at KASKA DKO Antwerp. For the moment he is working on his very first installation piece, around the concept of swarms and group-thinking. 

Sebastiano Aleo (Italy)
Sebastiano Aleo is currently attending a Bachelor in Electronic Music (Composition) at the Conservatory of Music of Padua, Italy. In 2008 he graduated in Visual Arts (Painting) at the Accademy of Fine Arts of Urbino, Italy. From 2008 until 2009 he attended two courses in Visual Art with Marjetica Potrc e Marguerite Kahrl and one in Theoretic Philosophy with Giorgio Agamben at Iuav, University of Venice, Italy. During these years he participated in several workshops oriented on sound installations, simple electronics/hacking, coding, live performance and on site natural sound recordings.

 
Hannes d'Hoine (Belgium)
Hannes d'Hoine studied double bass at the conservatory of Antwerp. He is interested in electronic music and has a modular synthesizer and lots of other electronic devices (noise makers, ribbon synth, analog polyphonic synth, samplers drum computers etc.) He mostly makes music for theatre, dance performances and he is in a couple of bands. The most known here in Belgium are Die Anarchistische Abentunterhaltung (or DAAU) and Dez Mona. This year he started studying Sound design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

Pascale Barret (Belgium)
As visual & performing artist, Pascale Barret uses tangible and virtual, scientific and historical media to address issues of hybrid identity. She combines and distorts processes of creation with the accrued consciousness that technology tends to transform our perception of the self and of the others. Based in her personal lab, she uses various forms of virtual assistants. As much as she considers the ‘big picture’ and tackles the slippery issues of gender, animality, artifice, sensuality, agglomerate and abstraction, her offerings are laced with poetry and self-derision.
