Echo Moiré (2012)

iii - Matteo Marangoni (IT)

Echo Moiré is a robot-opera-ballet in which a pair of mobile, directional loudspeakers play the STUK Verbeeckzaal like a musical instrument. The loudspeakers are operated automatically and ride across the hall floor on small wheels. With the aid of pulsing sounds they explore the acoustic characteristics of the space. The visitor is surrounded by a continually changing soundscape. Matteo Marangoni drew inspiration from the artwork Vespers (1968) by the American composer Alvin Lucier. This was a musical composition in which blindfolded performers played the space through which they were walking with the aid of echo-location devices. This positioning by using sound waves produces a spatial and site-specific composition.

The loudspeakers will be performed by the artist during Artefact:

iii (Instrument Inventor Initiative) is an international artists’ initiative with headquarters in The Hague. iii operates as a production house. The organisation promotes radical, interdisciplinary works that transgress the borders of music, visual arts, theatre and media design. Through developing new instruments and innovative presentation forms that connect image, sound, space and the body, they strive to create a unique experience for a broad audience.

Matteo Marangoni  has been a member of iii since 2012. In his performances he continually tests the boundaries of music, sound and the architectural space. These spaces literally become instruments. In his museological installations he takes on the role of an anthropologist who reveals the history of optical and analogue light and sound machines. He received his Masters at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from the department of ArtScience. His work has been exhibited in, among others, the Netherlands, Australia, UK, Italy and Germany.
