Operation - For Something Black and Hot (2012)

Okin Collective (KR)

In this installation the artists alert us to the shortcomings of governments during catastrophes such as Fukushima in Japan. The Japanese government failed to produce an effective solution for the local residents to protect themselves and prevent the disaster from escalating further. The artists’ collective examined various instruction manuals for disaster procedures and made an instructional video serving as an ultimate solution. By carrying out quasi-Chi exercises on a daily basis, civilians can build their resilience, not only for disasters but also for life in general. The work criticises the naivety and negligence of governments during disasters and points to a general and continual awareness of people and their surroundings. People can only effect change by increasing their awareness of their surroundings.

Okin Collective is a collaboration between Jougmin Yi, Hwayong Kim and Shiu Jin. The collective’s name refers to the Okin Apartment, a small residential complex where the collective presented their first project during the building’s demolition. Through different media such as installation, video, sound and performance, Okin Collective expose the absurd structure of capitalist society.
