Room C (extended) (2015)

Roel Heremans (BE)

In Room C (extended) the viewer is invited to enter a room and stand on one of the white crosses on the floor. Via headphones the viewer is instructed to close their eyes and imagine various situations. The mental images vary from the abstract to the extremely personal. Every now and again the viewer may open their eyes and move to another cross. In this way the participants sometimes end up standing directly opposite one another. The combination of an individual’s imagination and the spatial composition created by the participants’ movement through the space creates a play of introspection, reflection and projection. Reconstruction and the perception of time in Room C (extended) are also at the heart of this work.  Each participant is given different instructions whereby alternative compositions and experiences are created each time.

The Belgian artist Roel Heremans works with a hybrid art form that is somewhere between performance and installation. He was awarded the prestigious Belgian VOCATIO-beurs in 2014 with his series Room #. Heremans received his Bachelor’s degree at the Brussels RITS, and his Masters in ArtScience at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague next year.
