EVERY ANGLE IS AN ANGEL - SHANA MOULTON

Every Cell is a Bell / Every Angle is an Angel

Shana Moulton

I am always in search of magic, as a way to escape mundanity. To fulfill this quest, I convoke fantasies and hallucinations. Sometimes, in everyday life, we still manage to perceive way-outs towards reverie.
Shana Moulton interviewed by Lia Rochas Paris, "Shana et les objets parlant", Standard Magazine, December 6, 2011

In the film and sculptural installation Every Angle is an Angel and Every Cell is a Bell, we meet the artist Shana Moulton as her alter ego Cynthia. Cynthia is a fragile woman that yearns for self-improvement. In order to fulfill her need, she starts using alternative remedies and medicines. In both works the viewer enters a world where colours, objects, symbols and goods have control. Through her alter ego, Moulton denounces the need for perfection and improvement that controls our society and mindset, questions alternative health systems for body and mind, and critically addresses New Age spirituality, tv esoterism and the contemporary health craze.

The titles of the work are quotes of personal accounts from Journeys into the Bright World (1978), a book by Marcia Moore who chronicled her mind- and body-altering, therapeutical experiences with the drug ketamine.

Shana Moulton creates evocatively oblique narratives in her video and performance works. Combining an unsettling, wry humor with a low-tech, Pop sensibility, Moulton plays a character whose interactions with the everyday world are both mundane and surreal, in a domestic sphere just slightly askew. As her protagonist navigates the enigmatic and possibly magical properties of her home decor, Moulton initiates relationships with objects and consumer products that are at once banal and uncanny. Shana Moulton studied at the University of California, Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. She has also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine, and studied at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Moulton lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She is represented by Gimpel Fils, London, Gregor Staiger, Zurich and Crevecoeur, Paris.
