Gábor Ősz’ photo series Constructed View is the result of camera obscura projections found in newly constructed buildings. These camera obscuras are the result of a new method of casting concrete walls. Ősz’ intervention consists of using these small holes as projectors: the image of the outside world is being projected onto the walls inside. The tubular nature of the holes follows from the thickness of the walls, with the result that the projected images, rather than being spread all over the wall, are arranged in almost regular circles on the opposite wall. The single viewpoint is thus replaced by an accumulation of perspectives, which set the pictures in motion. This series proves that a picture does not only show, it also conceals: being the image of the light projected into darkness, it can be conceived as the reduction of illumination.
Unpacked 2 questions the relationship between reality and the image. Gabor Ősz arranges a pile of cardboard boxes in a space. Only one of the boxes is open. By using a mirror inside the boxes, light is projected into the box resulting into a real-time image at the box’s top surface.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Gábor Ősz pursued postgraduate studies at the Rijksacademie of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, where he has lived ever since.
