Huesos/Piedras/Flores (2011)

The work Huesos/Piedras/Flores contemplates about the concepts of ‘origins’, ‘memory’, and ‘time’. When we look at the work, we see bones, stones and flowers placed on a table. The scene evokes thoughts of a ritual or burial: a kind of an entrance from this world into the unknown. However, the bones are not real. María García-Ibáñez has meticulously modeled them in ceramic. In her work, García-Ibánez uses objects and initiates situations that are usually associated with specific eras such as Prehistory. Drawing is an essential part of her process, for it allows her to communicate her interest for geology and human anatomy.

García-Ibáñez’ work blurs the boundaries between sculptures and drawings, between science and fiction. She continuously presents new insights allowing the viewer to discover the magic of the ordinary. She is currently working on her first artist book.
