Anna Barham (UK)

Liquid Consonant presents a digitally animated head mouthing Greek words related to motion which all contain the letter rho. The physicality of its speech is accentuated through the sound effects substituted for the ‘voice over’ and the intricate machinery of digital animation with its sensual and simultaneously lifeless image. Alongside is a set of six anagram drawings, Ampler Tongue Transit. More than just a conceptual display of the vast possibility of meaning embedded within a set of letters, Barham uses these drawings as a method of writing. Here they investigate the visceral possibilities of the mouth as speaker, lover, liar and eater. Barham is inspired by Plato’s dialogue Cratylus, which explores the origins of language and the possible relationship between sound and meaning, proposing writing as the imitation of reality.

The practice of Anna Barhams spans performance, video and drawing. Much of her work centres on texts created using self-prescribed sets of rules, most notably the anagram, through which she explores the tension between technological processes and subjectivity. Her works highlight the plasticity of language and the collaborative and active role that a person takes in constructing meaning.
