Walls and Daphne Oram may not seem like the most obvious combination, but Oram’s influence on contemporary electronic music is impossible to ignore. In the BBC studios, Oram developed the Oramic machine, a prehistoric synthesizer that used light to turn images into sound. Not a fan of compromises and having trouble to finance her research, Oram ended up in obscurity.
Enter Walls, the Kompakt duo consisting of Sam Willis and Alessio Natalizia, who want to retrieve Oram from oblivion. For their latest album Sound Houses, Walls dove into Oram’s BBC Radiophonic Workshop archives and reconstruct her ideas and work. And this is not the end of Walls’ quest: after this project, they plan on rediscovering the work of other experimental composers like Delia Derbyshire and Pauline Oliveros.
Oaktree and Avondlicht in one project is a win-win situation. They both create wonderful things in their solo work, but when they join forces, there’s pure chemistry. Mesmerizing compositions originating from a wide array of influences, their sound is equally refreshing and mysterious.
