“My works can be described as documents of the encounter
between the photographer and the subject, and of
the act of fixing a situation for a period of time. Sometimes the scenery in
my studio is left untouched for weeks, simply remaining in this
one moment. Sometimes a model will hold a pose for almost
an hour, while I adjust every wrinkle in the t-shirt, the hair, in
this one gesture. It’s almost like building a sculpture.”
- Tom Callemin

In the photographic work Landscape Study, Tom Callemin plays with light and shadow, movement and chance, in order to question the reality of images. Allowing for a crack that breaks through the perfect staging, Callemin creates an opening through which the tension between character and person becomes tangible. As if only in the dark, we can see the real person breathing life into the image. The work is part of Callemin's practice in which questions about the role of the photographer, the role of the model, and the role of the viewer in relation to the construction and perception of images are key.

Tom Callemin is a Belgian visual artist working predominantly in photography and film. In his practice, he questions what the photographic medium can render visible and what remains hidden beneath the gaze of the lens. What types of situations does the camera evoke, and what can these situations tell us about the act of observation and the medium itself? Callemin seeks no images in reality, but rather tries to construct situations in which every detail of the image is provided.

The works of Tom Callemin were on view at FoMu (BE, 2015) and De Brakke Grond (NL, 2016) and were included in several national and international group shows. His videoworks have been screened at Redcat Los Angeles, Berlinale, Festival du nouveau cinéma Montréal, Kaunas International Film Festival, among others. Callemin received the Prix Levallois in 2015 and was nominated for the Unseen Talent Award in 2017. Since 2019 he is affiliated as artistic researcher to KASK & Conservatorium, the school of arts of HOGENT and Howest. He lives and works in Ghent, Belgium.
